61年前の1963年8月28日、アメリカのワシントンD.C.でキング牧師が人種差別撤廃を求める「ワシントン大行進」というデモが行われ、20万人以上が参加したそうです。

　当時のアメリカは、交通機関や学校、トイレやレストラン、バーなどにおいて、白人と黒人（有色人種）を分離するジム・クロウ法という人種分離法があり、「モンゴメリー・バス・ボイコット事件」のような人種差別への抗議運動が、その後、レストランの白人専用席での座り込みをする「シット・イン」やアラバマ州での「バーミングハム運動」へと公民権運動が拡大し、「ワシントン大行進」へとつながったようです。

　キング牧師の演説 ”I Have a Dream” が有名です。

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream that …… one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
